Soil thermal properties: direct measurement with KD2 Pro device (METER, USA). The device is portable and applicable for laboratory and field analyses. The KD2 Pro uses two sensors TR-1 and SH-1 to measure thermal conductivity, thermal resistivity, heat capacity, thermal diffusivity. The KD2 Pro uses transient line heat source method to make measurements.
Physical properties of soil solid phase: particle size distribution according to ISO 11277:2009, bulk and particle density; soil aggregation and water stability of soil aggregates.
Soil water retention properties: soil water retention at different water potentials ( water retention curve) using suction type apparatus (Shot filters G5 with diameters of pores 1.0-1.6 um), pressure plate cells and pressure membrane apparatus (SME|, desiccator method; hydraulic conductivity by de Boodt’s method in laboratory conditions.
Methods for characterizing of soil porosity: method of soil water retention curve (Laboratory of Soil Physics of ISAPP N. Poushkarov); method of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) using mercury porosimeter Autopore IV 9500 (Micrometrics) INC, USA (Institute of Agrophysics, Lublin, Poland); nitrogen adsorption isotherms for determining of pores with equivalent radius between 0.1–0.001μm measured with a Sorptomatic (model SO 1990, Fisons Instruments) (Institute of Agrophysics, Lublin) at the temperature of liquid Nitrogen (−195.82°C) in the range of relative pressures of nitrogen from p/po=0.004 to p/po=0.997(Institute of Agrophysics, Lublin); isotherms of water vapor desorption (Naono and Hakuman, 1993), measured in vacuum chamber with saturated solution of NaCl and solutions of sulphuric acid of stepwise increasing concentrations to maintain definite relative humidity of air (Institute of Agrophysics, Lublin).
Chemical soil properties and characteristics: soil organic carbon content, pH, physicochemical properties; signature of lipid compounds and pollutants (including metabolites) and quantitative analysis (GC, GC-MS), organic compounds content and composition in soils with different thermal properties, geochemical proxies for assessment of organic matter sources; mineral composition of selected soil samples will be determined by using X-ray diffraction analyses (external service).
Biological parameters: total biological activity will be determined through СО2 production, microbial biomass, total amount of microorganisms, invertaz activity; biodiversity, numbers and biomass of populations of earthworms (Lumbricidae).
